En la cima de una colina rocosa de Central Park llamada Vista Rock, se alza el Castillo Belvedere. Una edificación victoriana proyectada por Calvert Voux, que acabó de construirse en 1872.

Este castillo tiene el privilegio de encontrarse en el punto más alto del parque y, desde su terraza, los turistas pueden disfrutar de una espléndida panorámica de Central Park y sus alrededores. ¡No te las pierdas!

Pero, además de una situación privilegiada, el castillo cuenta con otras dos interesantes peculiaridades que vale la pena resaltar.

Una, es que el edificio no responde a una única corriente arquitectónica. Es el resultado de una amalgama de estilos, mezcla de neogótico con motivos románicos, chinos, moriscos y egipcios.

La otra peculiaridad es que el castillo fue construido a un tamaño más pequeño de lo normal para que, al ser visto desde el lago, éste pareciera más grande. La pena es que, hoy, la zona boscosa de The Ramble oculta ligeramente la visión del castillo desde el lago.

Si te apetece descubrirlo por dentro debes saber que, en la actualidad, el edificio es la sede del observatorio meteorológico de Nueva York y en su interior también alberga el Henry Luce Nature Observatory, un pequeño museo de historia natural que ofrece una muestra de la fauna y la flora presentes en el parque.
