Carrer Argenteria

Carrer Argenteria (36)

This street is one of the entrances to the Born neighbourhood, and goes from the old Plaça del Blat, or ‘wheat square’ to the church of Santa Maria del Mar. It is also the old road which connected the Roman walls to the sea.

Carrer Argentería is situated in the place where the Islam population settled after being expelled from the walled city of Barcelona in the 10th century. Over time, the population of the area became more diversified and the area itself became known as La Ribera.

During medieval times jewellers, goldsmiths and makers of daggers, knives and swords settled there, and these trades are reflected in the streets name today.

Thanks to its proximity to the sea, the neighbourhood soon became an area of great economic activity and home to merchants, aristocrats, sailors and part of the Jewish population who worked as moneylenders.

Today, you can find fashion stores and many cafés and restaurants here. At the end of the street are the Plaça de Santa Maria and the well-known church of Santa María del Mar.
