Ciutadella – Hivernacle

Ciutadella – Hivernacle (43C)

Nearby you'll also find L'HIVERNACLE (greenhouse) and L'UMBRACLE (umbraculum). Built around the same time, these two light, airy constructions offer protection and serve as a natural habitat for numerous plant species, some of which are very exotic.

L'HIVERNACLE, the work of Josep Amargós i Samaranch, is a fine example of the style of iron and glass architecture and engineering that was common at the time of Gustave Eiffel and his famous Tower. In the centre there is a fountain designed by sculptor Xavier Corberó and on the base we can read a fragment of the poem La Muntanya (The Mountain), by Joan Maragall.

L'UMBRACLE was designed by Josep Fontserè i Mestres and is made of brick and wood. The arches are supported by slender iron columns and populated by mostly tropical vegetation.
