La Monumental

La Monumental (96)

La Monumental was inaugurated in 1914 with the name of "El Sport" and renamed "La Monumental" in 1916. It currently has a seating capacity of just under 20,000. From the day of its inauguration La Monumental acquired great notoriety thanks to the matadors who appeared here, and was considered one of the three most prestigious bullrings in Spain, after Las Ventas in Madrid and La Maestranza in Seville. One of the highlights is the combination of Mudejar and Byzantine styles.

La Monumental has played host to countless musical events over the years, especially prior to the opening of the Palau Sant Jordi, as it was one of the few venues with a capacity of up to 25,000 people, taking into account spectators occupying the centre of the ring.

The most famous concert to be held here was that of The Beatles, on the 3rd of July, 1965. That historic concert was the only one offered by the Beatles in Barcelona and is still considered the first premier musical event to take place in the city. Over the years all the greats have played here: The Rolling Stones, Bob Marley, Bruce Springsteen, Queen, Dire Straits, etc.

The final destination of the place where great bullfighters formerly risked their lives has still not been decided, though proposed projects have included a wave pool, a mosque, a shopping centre ... The future of La Monumental is still up in the air.
