Passeig del Born

Passeig del Born (37)

This little promenade is unmissable for the modern tourist, although few people know that centuries ago it was the site for medieval tournaments. It goes from the Born Market to the church of Santa Maria del Mar and is full of fashion boutiques and restaurants. The narrow medieval streets which cross it hold some pleasant surprises such as small restaurants with exclusive wine cellars and famous chefs, for which a reservation is a must.

At the end of the promenade, next to the church, a square called the Fossar de les Moreres has a special significance for the Catalan people because it is the site of the neighbourhood cemetery for those who fell defending the city against the invasion of Philip V and his troops in the 18th century. Philip V tried to destroy the neighbourhood in order to build a large military fort here, as a punishment to the Catalan rebels.
