The Friedrichshain District is located behind Alexanderplatz and is one of the smallest neighbourhoods in Berlin.
Before the Second World War this area was inhabited by workers employed in the factories that gradually sprang up in the centre of the city. When war broke out, Friedrichshain was completely flattened and the GDR authorities had to rebuild it in the 1950’s. They constructed rows of housing blocks as well as the renowned Karl-Marx-Allee, a real pearl of the communist regime. In it were some of the buildings which marked that period. Despite this avenue bringing a bit of life to the district, when the regime fell it became forgotten.
The East Side Gallery is found in Friedrichshain.
And in the district’s northern section you can stroll through one of Berlin’s nicest parks.
