Kreuzberg District

Kreuzberg District (54)

This neighbourhood has been regenerated in the last few years. During the 1990’s it was considered one of the most marginal in Berlin.

It is well-known for having a large population of Turkish immigrants. Due to its close proximity to the wall, Kreuzberg was practically isolated. That is why rent prices were so low and recently arrived people from abroad were attracted to the area. Whatever the case, the situation has changed in the last few years due to its closeness to the Mitte District.

Checkpoint Charlie was located right here in Kreuzberg. This was a monitoring point where the crossing of people from one side to the other was regulated under very strict controls.

The area is sometimes known as “little Istanbul”, due to its very oriental character. In streets like Oranienstrase you can find a large selection of bars and restaurants serving exotic dishes from all over the world.

Despite being one of the most alternative and interesting districts for young people, it still remains a place where there is a high level of unemployment.

In Kreuzberg you can visit the “Topography of Terror” permanent exhibition in Stresemannstrase. This is an exhibition detailing the terror and crimes of the Nazi period, based in the Prinz-Albrecht-Gelande building. This building was constructed in 1945 and served as the SS and Gestapo’s centre of operations. Here you can also see a section of the Berlin Wall.
