Fountain of Neptune (Neptunbrunnen)

Fountain of Neptune (Neptunbrunnen) (25)

Right in front of the Church of Saint Maria is the Fountain of Neptune.

This is a splendid and impressive monument by Reinhold Begas from the year 1891. Its style is neo-baroque and was inspired by the fountain in Rome’s Piazza Navona de Bernini.

At the fountain’s centre is the figure of the God Neptune, surrounded by four women who represent the four principal rivers in Germany: the Elbe, Rhine, Oder and Vistula.

You will also see that it is profusely decorated with cherubs and mythological figures that are surrounded by a sea lion, turtle, snake and crocodile.

But this fountain has not always been here: originally it looked out on the surroundings of the square, Schlossplatz. However, in 1951, with the demolition of the Berlin Royal Palace, it was decided to remove and restore it. Years later, it was put in its current place, between the Church of Saint Maria and the Town Hall building.

This is a great place to sit down for a while, rest your feet and regain your strength ready for more sightseeing.
