If on the ´Island of Museums` there is an old museum, it is logical that there is also a new one.
In actual fact, ´Neues Museum` means New Museum, and this building is located right behind the Old Museum. It was built in 1855, according to the designs of August Stuller, a disciple of Schinkel.
It is a good example of neo-classical architecture. The use of steel in its structure made it the first large Prussian building to apply new techniques developed during the industrial revolution. Curiously, it was also the first Berlin building to be constructed using a vapour machine.
Despite being destroyed in the Second World War, the museum’s profusely decorated Egyptian halls were saved.
At the moment, a project by David Chipperfield is restoring the building. Work is expected to finish in 2009 when its collection of Egyptian art and papyruses will be on view again.
This magnificent collection is at present on display in the ´Altes Museum`.
