New National Library (Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin)

New National Library (Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin) (50)

The New National Library is located in Potsdamerstrase.

It was built to hold the contents which would not fit inside the Old Library, situated in Unter den Linden. It contains a significant collection of volumes of great value. In fact, some of the books burned in Bebelplatz by the Nazis in the terrible events of 1933 came from here, or more exactly, from the Old Library.

Instead of going in to have a look at the archives, it is worth just viewing the building from outside, while strolling down the street. It is an architectural landmark designed by the architect Hans Sharoun at the end of the 1970’s.
