The House of Terror is located in an old building which was formerly the general barracks of the local Nazi party, the ´The Arrow Cross`. Later, in 1945 it quietly became the headquarters of the much-feared communist secret police. Its current name, ´House of Terror`, comes from its history and the fact that since 2002 it has been home to a museum detailing the assassinations and atrocities committed by the two regimes that Hungary has had to bear: Fascism and Stalinism. The museum, however, has been criticized for paying more attention to those crimes committed by communists.
On arriving in the central courtyard you will see a large Russian tank welcoming you to the wonders and terrors inside. Among many displays it is particularly worth visiting the representation of former prison cells and objects connected to the deportations, torture and genocide that the country has had to bear. However, what really stands out is the ´Gallery of the Guilty`, a photograph display of spies, torturers, traitors and other people of the era who committed these crimes or allowed them to happen. Many of them are still alive today.
