San Frediano in Cestello

San Frediano in Cestello (49)

The neighbourhood of San Frediano is traditionally associated with the wool and leather industries, though its small, low houses are home to shops selling wide range of goods.

Here you will also find the San Frediano Gate, built in 1333. This is one of the best preserved sections of the old city walls and also the site where the French troops entered the town in 1494.

Passing through the Borgo, or borough, visitors will arrive at the church of San Frediano in Cestello, built in the late 17th century. Initially, this church belonged to the Carmelites, but in the year 1628 the Pope forced them to hand their church over to the Cistercians. In return, they received the Carmelite convent of Santa Maddalena dei Pazzi

Inside this church you will find a series of 17th and 18th century frescoes and stucco. But what really makes this building worth visiting is its rough stone façade, which contrasts with its beautiful dome, one of the most recognizable elements of the city.
