One of the jewels worth seeing in detail is the manueline portico on the church’s facade. Designed by Joao of Castile, it is a truly exuberant piece of decoration which combines passionately monarchic and religious themes.
It consists of a great many watermarks but on closer inspection you will discover many other details as well. For example, the statue of Henry the Navigator, two buttresses that flank the portico and two lions. The great arch, which frames two doors, is covered by a figure of the Virgin Mary.
In the tympanum it is possible to see base-relieves consisting of scenes from Saint Jerónimo’s life and the Portuguese coat of arms, a fine example of the manueline style.
With the sun in the background, the light falls upon the entwined manueline ornaments and offers a spell-binding picture.
