The last few arches of the “Aguas Livres” viaduct carried the water to a castle-shaped structure that worked like a cistern, supplying water to Lisbon.
This lovely spot, which contains arches decorated with tiles, was developed in 1834.
The place also has a romantic atmosphere, maybe due to the pastoral air that surrounds the central lake and Carlos Mardel’s detailed designs of the surroundings. This made it a popular meeting place for lovers, even for kings and their mistresses.
