One Canada Square

One Canada Square (3)

Dominating the horizon of East London, from the business area of Canary Wharf, stands the imposing skyscraper in the form of an obelisk called One Canada Square.

In 1991 this Goliath of buildings designed by César Pelli snatched the title of the tallest building in the United Kingdom from Tower 42, previously known as NatWest Tower, with its 235 metres in height. However, despite its extraordinary height, to go by lift from the vestibule to the 50th floor takes just 40 seconds.

At the top of the pyramid and crowning One Canada Square at 40 metres height and weighing 11 tons, a luminous sign warns aircraft of its presence.

27,000 tons of steel and half a million bolts were used for the structure. The festival of figures continues with the more than 4,000 steps and almost 4,000 windows that the building has. The 9,000 people that work in it can see every day that its 11-metre high vestibule is covered with 8,000 square metres of marble brought from Italy and Guatemala.

Although it is a spectacular building, remember that One Canada Square is a complex of private offices, so that you will have to restrict yourself to taking in its splendid profile from outside.
