Pall Mall

Pall Mall (26)

This splendid avenue was drawn up in the 19th century in a similar way to those that already existed in other European capitals. Its purpose was, and still is, eminently ceremonial. Bordered by a row of trees and by Saint James Park and Green Park, Pall Mall goes from Trafalgar Square to the main façade of Buckingham Palace, the official residence of Queen Elizabeth II.

The avenue is the setting for different parades, such as the military ceremony called Trooping the Colour, which celebrates the birthday of the British monarch in June. In 2002, as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations, more than one million people filled Pall Mall to commemorate the 50 years reign of Queen Elizabeth II.

When a foreign head of state visits London, they are welcomed with a ceremonious ride along this road, which for the occasion adorns the many flagpoles that flank it with Union Jacks and flags of the country from which the dignitary has come.

But not only monarchs and political leaders have their place here. Long-distance runners are also grateful to its straight layout, since the route of the famous London Marathon ends here.
