Belvedere Castle

Belvedere Castle (122)

Belvedere Castle stands at the top of a rocky hill called Vista Rock in Central Park. Calver Voux designed this Victorian building, which was completed in 1872.

This castle has the privilege of being located at the park's vantage point; thus, from its terrace, visitors can enjoy a splendid view of Central Park and its surroundings. Do not miss out on it!

But, in addition to its ideal location, the castle has two other interesting features that are worth highlighting.

One is that the building does not follow a single architectural movement. It is the result of a combination of styles, mixing neo-Gothic with Romanesque, Chinese, Moorish and Egyptian motifs.

The other peculiarity is that the castle was built smaller than usual, so that, when viewed from the lake, the latter seemed larger in size. The pity is that, nowadays, the forest area of The Ramble slightly hides the castle's view from the lake.

If you want to discover its inside, you should know that, at present, the building is home to the meteorological observatory of New York and its interior also houses the Henry Luce Nature Observatory, a small natural history museum offering a sample of the park's wildlife and flora.
