Cunard Building

Cunard Building (10)

Starfish, seahorses, mermaids, shells and even the ships of four great sailors, Christopher Columbus, Erik the Red, Francis Drake and Jean Cabot. Enter the Cunard Building and you will be immersed in the world of the sea, because its walls, vaults and other details are home to paintings, murals and medallions relating to overseas travel.

This fantastic building, constructed in 1919, was the headquarters of Cunard Line. It was in the 20s when Cunard Line merged with the White Star Line and became the top shipping company and even today continues to work with such luxurious and famous vessels as the Queen Mary 2, the Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Victoria. However, unfortunately, as most people now come to New York by plane, since 1976 the Cunard Building has housed a vast US post office.

The building is a real gem, designed by Benjamin Wistar Morris alongside the consultancy firm Carrère&Hastings. The exterior has a Neo-Renaissance façade, although the surprise is to be found inside. Go inside. You will be amazed by its lavish lobby and the octagonal main room that is 20 metres high, topped by three domes with countless details and decorations, the work of Ezra Winters. For many, it rivals the Grand Central Terminal as the most beautiful and spectacular non-religious interior of all Manhattan.

Although you can no longer buy a cruise ticket here and you have not sent a letter, we are sure you will love the Cunard Building.
