Ford Foundation Building

Ford Foundation Building (78)

A hospital in Michigan, a bank for the disadvantaged people in Bangladesh, educational television programmes and even museums. Since its inception in 1936, the Ford Foundation has helped to carry out large projects in different parts of the world and has become one of the largest philanthropic organizations in the world. This private foundation, created in 1936 by Edsel and Henry Ford, was founded in Michigan and has its headquarters in New York, on the very spot where you’re currently standing.

The building cleverly combines brick and glass, allowing us a glimpse of its exposed steel beams. It was designed in 1967 by the firm Roche-Dinkeloo and was the first building in the United States to reserve a space for horticultural purposes. That is, its atrium houses a spectacular green space, which was soon copied and implemented in malls and other skyscrapers. It is a pleasant interior garden with trees, terraces and even a pond.

The projects the foundation has helped bring to life are endless. From the fight against HIV and AIDS, to helping the poorest African countries, to providing funding for artistic projects, to opening museums. At the Ford Foundation, anything is possible.

In fact, although few tourists know this, one of the projects the foundation financed in 1969 was the creation and launch of the educational program "Sesame Street", which continues to entertain, impart values and educate the little ones to this day.
