One57

One57 (141)

This sleek 306-metre-high skyscraper, with its 75 floors, was completed in 2014 and is one of the tallest buildings in all of Manhattan.

The building has been designed by the French architect and urbanist, Christian de Portzamparc, who was born in Casablanca in 1944 and won the prestigious Pritzker Prize in 1994. These awards are widely known as the Nobel Prizes of Architecture and have been awarded year after year since 1979.

The One57 is a building coated with light and dark glass, which creates vertical lines that stylise it even more, while intelligently handling the light it receives, and make the most out of its city views, especially of Central Park. Its setbacks or different recessions are staggered onto 57th Street, whereas its curved spikes round off its gorgeous appearance, which, since its construction, has changed New York's well-known skyline.

A renowned hotel offers over 200 rooms on several building floors and, on the other hand, the upper floors have been earmarked for luxury apartments, whereas a 1,000-square-metre duplex was sold for more than 90 million US dollars. Besides being the tallest residential building in New York, it also held the record for the highest price ever paid for a single residence until the construction of 432 Park Avenue, just three blocks from here.

Curiously enough, though, the One57 is not only known for its author, its appearance or its prices, as it was in 0ctober 2012, in the midst of construction, when Hurricane Sandy passed through Manhattan and, among other things, destroyed part of a crane that was being used in the construction of this skyscraper. This meant several streets had to be evacuated. All the neighbours were on the lookout for further events, which, fortunately, did not have more consequences than just being an anecdote, but caused several complaints from businesses in the area, which had to close for a few days and decreased their income. And from those who had to pay high compensation sums.
