Metro Art-Noveau

Metro Art-Noveau (36)

We are not going to explain to you the extensive layout of the Paris metro system. If we mention this station to you it is so that you get your camera ready and take the opportunity to immortalise one of the most beautiful art-nouveau stations in the entire city.

The Abesses metro station on what is today Line 12 was opened in the early 20th century, when the newly-built Paris metro started operating. It is situated in a pretty square called Place des Abbesses, halfway between the striptease clubs of Place Pigalle and the bohemian Place du Tertre.

The station contains one of the only two covered entrance designed by Hector Guimard. The other one can be seen on Line 2, at the Portre Dauphine station.

Hector Guimard was one of the leading figures of art-nouveau in France. He received this commission directly from the Metropolitan Company of Paris, which chose his designs because they saw them then a symbol of progress.

An iron framework with organic forms, glazed ceiling, an awning in the shape of a fan and amber lights. For its shape and great delicacy it has become known as the “dragonfly”.

Since 1978, these works have been declared of artistic-historical interest and have thankfully been protected. Take at least one photo of it.
