Musée Montmartre

Musée Montmartre (61)

The Montmartre Museum was created in 1961 in the House of Rosimond.

Mr. Rosimond was an actor and member of the Molière theatre group, and this building was, as from 1680, the refuge where he rested between shows.

This large 17th-century house is the oldest in the district and has a special charm. With the house, its garden, the view and the light… you will appreciate why, as from 1875, this house became the refuge of several artists such as Renoir, Utrillo, Valadon, Dufy, Satie, Bernard and Poulbot...

Renoir was one of the first to rent one of the apartments with the aim of using the marvellous garden to paint nudes with calm, away from indiscreet glances.

And gradually, artists to artist is how Montmartre became the cradle of the impressionists and of Parisian bohemia in the 19th century.

The museum comprises paintings, posters, documents, ceramics, lithographs, drawings, furniture, photographs... all related to the district of Montmartre and its bohemian past.

It is a collection that continues to grow and which is formed around four central themes: historical Montmartre, Montmartre in festivals, The Commune and artistic bohemia.

The museum houses a cultural centre that organises conferences and concerts.

So there you have it. If you want to know more about the history of this district and particularly about the bohemian life that it exuded, do not hesitate to go in.
