Port de l'Arsenal

Port de l'Arsenal (72)

Clearly, in a city with a river like the Seine, there are no shortages of ports.

The Port de l’Arsenal or Port de Plaisance de Paris Arsenal is a leisure port that is very little known by the majority of tourists, although more than 1,000 boats pass through it every year.

This large artificial lake was excavated at the beginning of the 19th century in the remains of what was the natural moat of the fortress of the Bastille, between the Seine and the Saint-Martin canal, the aim at the time being for supplying wood for the craftsmen of the Faubourg de Saint-Antoine, to the west of the Bastille. Even today you will be able to see carpenters’ workshops and shops, cabinetmakers, varnishers and other craftsmen as you walk around this area.

Some years ago, in 1983, the place finally became a leisure port at the behest of the Paris City Council and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

As well as yachts and other beautiful boats, on the east bank of the lake there is a lovely garden with pretty terraces, which goes from Place de la Bastille to Pont Morland. You will have a great time walking around this area and having a drink while watching the coming and going of the boats.
