Cathedral Orthodox Saint Alexandre Nevsky

Cathedral Orthodox Saint Alexandre Nevsky (83)

Not all the churches in Paris are Catholic, although the majority are. Among its places of worship it is possible to find some dedicated to other religious denominations. One of the most spectacular is the Orthodox Cathedral Saint Alexandre Nevsky, which represents the large Russian community of Paris.

This impressive cathedral has four gilded bronze cupolas. It was designed by members of the Academy of Fine Arts of Saint Petersburg and financed by Czar Alexander II and the Parisian Russian community. The building was completed in 1861.

The façade and gilded cupolas are in traditional orthodox Russian style. The Christ of the tympanum of the façade that you can see is a reproduction of a mosaic by Rávena.

The wall of icons inside the Cathedral of Saint Alexandre Nevsky divides the building in two. The Greek cross ground plan, the mosaics and frescos are in neo-Byzantine style.

The Russian presence in Paris is not restricted to this cathedral. During the Russian revolution of 1917 many Russians were exiled in Paris. Rue Daru, where the cathedral is, and its environs are known as “little Russia”. There you will find Russian schools, dance academies and charming tea salons and bookshops.
