Saint Eustache

Saint Eustache (27A)

Right by here you can visit the Church of Saint Eustache, in clearly Gothic style. This church began to be built in 1532 and was finished a hundred years later, although some parts were never finished.

Seeing as the kings lived in the Louvre, this was close for them, and it was used as a royal church. This church was the setting for grand events of great personalities. Louis XIV received his communion here, Moliere celebrated his wedding and Anne of the Austrias and Mirabeau were veiled here.

It is one of the most beautiful churches in Paris. And inside you will find some exceptional Gothic arches, although most of the ornamentation is Renaissance and classical. This is because in 1840 it burnt down and most of the Gothic decoration was lost.

With 101 stops and 8,000 pipes you can admire one of the largest organs n France. In the ranking it will be third behind Notre Dame and the church of Saint Sulpice. It was built in 1854 and it is well worth stopping and listening to it since the impressive cupola provides perfect acoustics.

The ground plan is identical to that of Notre Dame and inside the measurements are very similar: 88 metres long and 33 metres high. It contains valuable works of art such as the Martyrdom of Saint Eustace by Vouet and a beautiful image of the Virgin by Pigalle.

Furthermore, alongside the church you will find an enormous head and hand, which is the curious sculpture called The Chaperon, next to which you will certainly want to take a photo.
