Located on the banks of the Arno river, in a part of the premises of a former Benedictine convent, the Museo Nazionale di San Matteo is the largest municipal museum in the city.
Here you will find a complete collection of Medieval and Gothic sculptures and paintings, but keep in mind that the exhibition lacks explanatory data and its rooms are not numbered. Despite this, it's well worth a visit.
Of all the interesting pieces you'll find inside, look for the "La Madonna del Latte" by Nino Pisano, another of the prolific members of this family of artists. It is a beautiful golden marble sculpture depicting the Madonna nursing the Child, a theme shared with the majority of works produced in that period. An important fact about this sculpture is that it was initially located in Santa Maria della Spina church; a real Gothic jewel; if you have not visited it yet, it is a must-see.
You can also find attractive pieces by famous artists including Masaccio, Donatello and Simone Martini.
