Cinelândia is the name by which the area around the Floriano Square is popularly known in honour of Floriano Vieira Peixoto, where you will be able to see a monument of the nation's second president.

Cinelândia is like the centre of the centre. It is the largest public square in the centre of Rio de Janeiro.

The Floriano Square earned its Cinelândia nickname in the 30s, when it became a carioca version of New York's Times Square, with numerous cinemas, theatres, bars, restaurants and nightclubs. Over the years it lost many of its attractions, but it retains many of the most distinguished buildings in the city.

Around it, you will be able to enjoy from the famous Odeon Cinema, the only cinema that remains from the time when Cinelândia lived up to its name. Up to the classic Bar Amarelinho, easily recognisable by its large yellow façade. Founded in 1921, celebrities like Oscar Niemeyer and André Filho were frequent at their tables, composer of the famous march "Cidade Maravilhosa", which became the anthem and synonym of Rio de Janeiro.

Another of the beautiful buildings is the Câmara de Vereadores, known as Gaiola de Ouro (Golden Cage), Rio de Janeiro's legislative headquarters, which was famous for its costly construction.

The wonderful Municipal Theatre, the National Museum of Fine Arts or the National Library, the seventh largest library in the world, with more than nine million books.
