City of Samba

City of Samba (74)

Welcome to the place where it is Carnival all year round! Located in the port area and covering an area of over one hundred thousand square metres, this set of fourteen industrial buildings are the dream factory of the most important Samba Schools of Rio de Janeiro.

The industrial buildings hosting the different schools surround the central square in a layout intended to symbolise the acceptance and embrace of samba to its African ancestors. It is where the costumes and decorations have been made since February 2006, and the floats of the different Samba Schools are created and assembled. It also serves as a venue for the rehearsals carried out for the preparation of all activities related to the greatest popular festival in the city of Rio.

If you wish to visit some of the Samba School units and observe first hand the preparation of the Carnival parade, some of them offer guided tours through their facilities. You can watch one of Rio's best kept secrets, which is not revealed until the arrival of the long-awaited and famous Carnival. In addition, you have no excuse not to enjoy the Carnival, despite visiting Rio outside of the carnival dates, as you can see different exhibitions being performed on the central square of the Cidade do Samba throughout the year to experience first hand the strength and magic of Rio de Janeiro's Carnival.
