In July 2010, Ipanema added a new attraction. The Elevador do Cantagalo and the Mirante da Paz joined the list of locations where you can observe Rio from above. The elevator ride is free and also serves to integrate the Pavão/Pavãozinho-Cantagalo favela with the neighbourhood.

It's a safe place, and some of the favela locals even offer to act as guides to show you the community and the favela museum for just a few reals.

From the viewpoint you can see the Praça Osório, the Cagarras Islands off the coast, streets of the Leblon neighbourhood, the surrounding buildings and part of the favela.
