This is one of the most significant buildings in Rio de Janeiro. Fort Copacabana has protected the beautiful beaches of Guanabara Bay for over a hundred years.

Located strategically to guard Copacabana Beach since 1914, the bunker covers an area of over 114,000 square metres, with walls over 12 metres wide and German Krupp guns of 305, 190 and 75 millimetres, which you can get close to for a better look. Fort Copacabana is a veritable battleship on earth.

It starred in one of the greatest military revolts in the country's history, on 5 July 1922. It was known as the 18 of the Copacabana Fort revolt, and the fort suffered a bombardment as a result of the uprising against the government of the city of Rio, which up until then was the capital of the Federal District in Brazil. The heroism and endurance of the men who watched from Fort Copacabana made it possible to restore peace in the city and today you can stroll through the interior of this immense reinforced armour, which continues to watch over Guanabara Bay.

It houses the fascinating Historical Museum of the Army.

As well as being able to watch the changing of the guard, you can take in some splendid views.

You'll also find a branch of the wonderful Confeitaria Colombo, which of course is a lot less glamorous than the original in the old centre (which, incidentally, is not to be missed), but hey, the panoramic views make it worth a visit.
