Museu Internacional De Arte Naïf

Museu Internacional De Arte Naïf (30)

Surrounded by lush vegetation and just 50 metres from the train station that leads to the top of Corcovado, the International Naïve Art Museum houses one of the most complete collections of naïve art in the world. More than 6000 works by various international artists are exhibited in this museum, whose building, a 19th-century mansion, is considered part of the Cultural Heritage of the Cosme Velho neighbourhood.

Brazil is one of the five countries with most influence on naïve art worldwide. With the opening of this museum in 1995, the French collector Lucien Finkelstein helped local talent to become the focus of worldwide attention, just as other international artists had done before.

The museum's collection spans five centuries of naïve art, from the 15th century to the present, and when you enter the exhibition, it's impossible not to be captivated by the variety of bright colours and expressive forms. The drawings are extremely detailed and often inaccurately portray size and volume, with detailed contours and with creative and expressive power prioritised over faithfulness to the concept they represent.

The museum features the world's longest naïve art painting. You only have to pop your head round the door of the main room to delight in the creation of Apreciada Azedo, which tells the story of Brazil in 24 metres. We recommend you go to one of the most popular paintings in the museum, an impressive view of Rio de Janeiro in which the artist Lia Mittarakis beautifully defines the most characteristic monuments of the carioca city.
