It's Sunday? You're in luck! Ever since 1968, this square has been home to the Feira Hippie de Ipanema, one of the world's largest open-air art and craft fairs. Everyone who visits Rio de Janeiro comes here to pick up some gifts for their family and friends and perhaps treat themselves too.
More than 400 stalls selling wooden crafts, pottery, clothing, leather garments, jewellery, ornaments, furniture, silver, instruments and sculptures ... A wealth of artistic creativity. It's said to be the world's largest outdoor craft fair.
In the centre of the square there's a row of painters and there are also food places, such as the Barraca de Lucinha, which sells a wide range of Bahian dishes. The market also boasts stalls where you can enjoy a fruit juice or an ice-cold beer, lanchonetes where you can eat very cheaply, cafés and live music venues.
It's certainly a wonderful way to spend a Sunday. It opens from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., even if it rains.
