Complesso di San Michele a Ripa

Complesso di San Michele a Ripa (83)

This massive complex measuring more than 300 metres today houses the Ministry of Culture. There are sometimes temporary exhibitions held that are open to the public.

San Michele extends along the River Tiber and was built by Pope Innocence XII in 1693 as a centre to give shelter and education to conflictive young people.

In 1700 a home was built for abandoned old people, and shortly after women who had stayed single came as well. In fact, one of its courtyards has the unambiguous name of “Courtyard of the Spinsters”.

With this history it is clear that for centuries San Michele a Ripa became a large ghetto for all the misfits of each period in time.

Moreover, at the top end you will find the Porta Portese, where a market is held every Sunday.
