Trastevere

Trastevere (75)

Trastevere is one of the most popular areas of Rome and also one of the most lively. Until very recently, it was a working class neighbourhood and its inhabitants considered themselves to be the true descendants of the ancient Romans. Because of a rise in the price of rents, the number of former residents has now diminished. Many have preferred to go and live in other more modern areas of the city. Today, most of its residents are intellectuals, artists and students.

Trastevere has nonetheless maintained its special charm and many of its traditions. Its streets are still covered in cobbles and the medieval feeling of the buildings remains. In the heart of the neighbourhood is the Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere, with the famous basilica of the same name. You will, in fact, notice that this zone abounds in important churches. This is because the district of Trastevere was the site upon which the city’s first Christians settled.

You will also notice a large number of craftspeople, art galleries and small shops. Its Trattorias are also usually full, particularly at weekends.

Trastevere, in fact, became a great centre for tourism after the Second World War and continues to be so today. We therefore recommend you take a night-time stroll to enjoy its restaurants, pubs and terrace bars, which make the atmosphere of the zone very popular.
