Galleria dell'Accademia di San Luca

Galleria dell'Accademia di San Luca (33)

This is a beautiful but not very well-known spot by tourists. So if you feel like escaping from the madding crowd and see more exclusive things, this is the place for you.

The Academia di San Luca is inside the Palazzo Carpegna, close to the Fontana di Trevi. This was not always the case, however. It originally had its home in the Roman Forum, but the excavations undertaken by Mussolini on the Forums forced it to be moved.

The palace was built by Giacomo della Porta at the end of the 16th century, and was later modified by Borromini, who built its spiral stairway. You will reach this stairway after crossing a tiny garden.

The Academy was founded by a group of artists, who gave it the name of Saint Luke because it was thought that the apostle had a special interest in art.

Among the works that you will be able to see inside feature those by Raphael, Titian, Rubens or Van Dyck. You will also find some pieces by the few women artists who have achieved fame in the art world.
