Montemartini Museum

Montemartini Museum (94)

The old power station of the Via Ostiense has recently been turned into a small branch of the Capitoline Museums. Initially, it was seen as a temporary measure while these museums were being reformed. But in order to ensure that the public were able to see the works they contained, in 1997 the “Machines and Gods” exhibition was held in the rooms of the power station.

The splendid museum space was very popular, and in 2005 became a permanent centre for the most recently acquired collections of the Capitoline Museums.

The fact is its interior will surprise you. The marvellous contrast between the old, grey iron machines and the sculptures and other classical works make this a unique and different museum.

Moreover, the works on show here are splendid. In the Machine Room, for example, you will find sculptures and friezes from the Teatri di Pompeo. In the Furnace Room there are statues from the ancient gardens of the aristocratic Roman houses. In the Columns Room you will find mosaics from the Esquiline necropolis.

In a museum that will certainly surprise you, you will be able to see pieces ranging from a sculpture of the head of Cleopatra to a steam turbine from 1915: enjoy its unique mixture.
