Piazza Barberini

Piazza Barberini (34)

The Piazza Barberini is at the junction of the Strada Felice and the Via Veneto, and is one of the busiest points in the city for traffic.

In this square you will find two fountains designed by Bernini in the 1640s for the Barberini family.

Firstly, in the centre of the square, you will see the Fontana del Tritone, one of the most notable fountains by the artist and also the first one he designed. Here you can see a Triton with a muscular body finished in the form of a mermaid, which makes a jet of water spout out in a spiral. You will also see some acrobatic dolphins over their heads and, between their tails, the Papal Tiara, Saint Peter’s keys and the coat of arms of the Barberini family.

Secondly, half-hidden in one of the corners of the square, you will find the Fontana delle Api, or Fountain of the Bees. This modest work is made up of three massive stone bees, emblem of the Barberini family, which seem to be drinking from the water that spouts from the fountain. A Latin inscription tells us that this is for public use.
