San Francesco a Ripa

San Francesco a Ripa (85)

It is stated that Saint Francis of Assisi lived here in a hospice during his visit to Rome in 1219. In the 13th century this church was built over an old basilica, and was later rebuilt in the 17th century. This reconstruction, undertaken by Cardinal Pallavicini, took on a splendid Baroque style.

Although from an architectural point of view it is not very interesting, we recommend you visit it so as not to miss another impressive piece of work produced by Bernini, The Blessed Ludovica Albertoni. You will find this 1674 work in the last chapel on the left. The sculpture shows the devout woman in the agonising moment of her death, and you will surely be impressed by the pain the image transmits and its theatrical lighting.

Moreover, if you ask the verger, he will let you visit Saint Francis’s cell, where you can see his stone cushion.
