San Pietro in Montorio

San Pietro in Montorio (79)

If you approach this splendid Franciscan church, you will find the view to be had from its steps is quite startling.

San Pietro in Montorio was founded in the Middle Ages, in the place where it was supposed, mistakenly, that Saint Peter was crucified. The church was rebuilt around 1480 following a design by Baccio Pontelli.

When you enter, you can see, in the first chapel on the right, the stunning Flagellation by Piombo. In the two side chapels you will find works by Volterra and Vasari, while in the second chapel on the left you can take in works by Bernini.

Below San Pietro it is also said that the tomb of Beatrice Cenci is to be found, a noblewoman executed at the age of 22 for murdering her father. It seems that this event caused a great deal of scandal at the time, since she was the subject matter for many paintings and poems.

In the middle of the cloister of the adjacent monastery is Il Tempietto, created in 1502 by Bramante. It is a circular building surrounded by 16 Corinthian columns, and was paid for by the Catholic Monarchs to commemorate the birth of their son.
