Sant'Ivo alla Sapienza

Sant'Ivo alla Sapienza (59)

You are before a church that is unlike any other in Rome and can be easily recognised from other points in the city because of the cross that crowns it. Sant’Ivo is set in the courtyard of Palazzo della Sapienza, which was the headquarters of the University of Rome until 1935. The church is entered through the cloister.

The facade and the courtyard are by Giacomo della Porta while the seventeenth century church was designed by Borromini. The dome is, in fact, one of his masterpieces and has an interesting spiral shape upon which a crown of flames is superimposed.

Inside, the church is completely white and its walls feature a surprising combination of concave and convex shapes.

If you make your way outside, beyond the corner on the right there is a fountain dedicated to Saint Eustache.
