Santo Stefano Rotondo

Santo Stefano Rotondo (16)

The church of Santo Stefano is one of the oldest round churches in Rome and is located in a spot that just invites contemplation. It was also one of the first Christian churches in the city, built between 468 and 483.

When you enter this picturesque church you will firstly come across the remains of Nero’s aqueduct. Originally, the outer walls occupied more space and there were eight entrances. No evidence has ever been found that there was an altar, and the one standing there today dates from the 13th century.

In the 16th century the walls were decorated with frescos by Niccolò Pomarancio. They show horrific images of the systems of torture the Romans employed with the first Christian martyrs.

The best time to visit the church is mid-morning when the sunrays enter the 22 windows of the triforium.
