Testaccio

Testaccio (87)

Monte Testaccio is an artificial hill made by the Romans between 140 AD and 250 AD from the millions of amphorae thrown there when this was the port area to where the boats arrived to unload.

Today, most of the area is made up of residential buildings, with its shops and schools. Thus it is not exactly a tourist area, at least not during the day. We say this because at night the Testaccio becomes the spot where most of the nightlife takes place for young Romans. This is due to the large numbers of restaurants, bars, discotheques and other trendy spots in the area.

So if you feel like sampling a bit of the Roman nightlife, come here. Also, if you look at the walls of many places, you can still discover the remains of the terracotta amphorae from which the hill is made.
