Seville’s Teatro de la Maestranza is located in the heart of the city, near the Real Maestranza bullfighting ring, and is considered one of Spain’s leading avant-garde theatres. It houses the largest stage in Spain and was built in 1992 for the World’s Fair held in Seville that same year.
As such, you’ll find that the building is austere and functional, the work of architects Luis Marín de Terán and Aurelio del Pozo. The theatre is cylindrical in shape and the façade that faces the river is decorated with wrought iron that belonged to the old munitions factory that previously occupied this site.
The theatre can hold nearly 2000 people, and the acoustics were designed to accommodate many different types of shows, from opera and flamenco to ballet and operettas.
In fact, it has hosted the world’s leading opera companies and most important orchestras. So, if you have time, be sure to pick up tickets at the box office and watch one of the many shows that play here throughout the season. You won’t regret it.
