Café Sperl

Café Sperl (52G)

Gumpendorfer Strasse, 11.

Welcome to the story. This charming old typical Viennese café has a loyal clientèle. Which includes many young people who like to play pool. It also serves hot strudels (apple pie) which are epic. Or if you like chocolate there is nothing like the Sperl cake, a delicious blend of almond and chocolate cream.

Opened in 1880, the Sperl is called Cafe Ronacher named in honour of its owner, Jacob Ronacher but after one year of having opened he decided to sell it to the Sperl family.

The Sperl began to be attended by a select clientèle of writers, architects, painters, musicians and actors. Even terrible figures from history such as Adolf Hitler were regulars at the café. At the time when he had not yet swapped the brush for rifles and still dreamed of being an artist, the future Fuhrer frequented Café Sperl, near the Academy of Fine Arts where his application for admission was twice rejected.

You will love its decoration, its huge selection of coffees and homemade food served in generous portions. It is a place of pure Viennese lineage.

Café Sperl belongs to the select group of historical cafés that have survived intact over time. In addition, due to its location a little farther away, it is often less busy, precisely what constitutes a large part of its charm.
